On New Year's Day the club provided a voluntary patrol for the beach going public. Nothing too serious, just a few clubbies and the 4WD. Well, Evan is on the beach and decides that as he is there he may as well sign on for patrol. No sooner had he signed on than a young girl signals that she is in distress...
Evan, supported by Albert, swims out and rescues the young woman, who was by then exhausted by trying to swim against the current. Once the young woman is safe and reassured Evan realises what the time is. "Oh, is that the time? I have got to go", and so he leaves. In less than one hour Evan signed on, rescued and reassured a definate drowning possibility, signed off and went on to whatever it was that was more important than being on the beach on New Year's Day. IS THAT EFFICIENT OR WHAT ? Note: When they tell you on TV and radio that if you are in a rip you should swim parallel to the shore to get out of it, they do not mention that this does not work if the rip is a littoral current (refer to your blue book if you do not know what a littoral current is) and they do not mention that at some point you have to swim in, even if it is what we recognise as a regular rip! |
